Bonavox Spotlight: Katherine Wallace

Bonavox is a people-first company so we are excited to spotlight the good people who make up the Bonavox team.

We’d like to introduce you to Katherine Wallace, one of our earliest hires. She is passionate about writing, diversity & inclusion, and her family.

Bonavox: Katherine, tell us about what led to you working at Bonavox?

Katherine Wallace: I came to Bonavox looking to expand my abilities as a writer and communicator after working in nonprofit fundraising. Being both challenged and working within my strengths is important to me. What I've appreciated about my Bonavox assignments is how they’ve recognized many of my capabilities that I didn't see as business valuable and then gave me an opportunity to exercise them.

Strategies are useful, but responding to people is better.

What’s something in your work that you are proud of?

I've been working in Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (DI&B) communications with one of our clients for 4 years and it's an area I'm extremely passionate about. I've seen the commitment from leadership develop in that time, and our DI&B team has been laying the groundwork for incremental cultural change. This year, events have precipitated a national reckoning with the disparity in justice and equality for our Black neighbors and colleagues. It's been incredibly exciting to see the engagement from all levels of the organization as staff and leaders respond personally and professionally to the events happening around us. I'm proud of the work we're doing – that we've been ready to do – to help the organization leverage this opportunity to move the needle on building a more diverse and inclusive culture.

If you could wave a magic wand and every client would instinctively do or know one thing related to change communications, what would it be?

Strategies are useful, but responding to people is better. The best strategies are humble; they make space for people work.

Bonavox has recognized many of my capabilities that I didn’t see as business valuable and then gave me an opportunity to exercise them.

Bonavox prioritizes a work-life balance with each of its consultants. What does this look like for you personally?

My kids are grown and live (too) far away, so traveling to see family is really important to my husband and me. I've had a lot of flexibility with Bonavox to prioritize my family first.

Over the past few “safer-at-home” months in Los Angeles, I'm back to cooking more. My close-to-home outings include biking, sitting in the park and reading or writing. I'm a podcast junky, too, and I've been listening and learning a lot, trying to do the work that this time is asking from us.

What’s something you appreciate about Bonavox that not everyone would know about us?

We're small but mighty, by which I mean flexible, creative, resourceful, good humored, and supportive.

What are you looking forward to right now?

Is it boring if I say seeing my family in person again?
